The Doctor Orders Runs
Sunday 02:07:06

On a scorching Sunday afternoon, Chesterfords played hosts to Cambridge Universities Jesus College Cricket Club. Winning the toss Chesterfords decided to bat first on what looked like a good batting wicket.

This match marked the first time in three years that brothers Wazz and Naz Mughal played together, and they marched to the crease with purpose to commence the innings. The tone of the game was set in the first over with Wazz crashing 13 runs off it whilst Naz played the perfect counterfoil at the other end with his solid defence. Wazz continued in the same vein as he hit 10 fours and 2 sixes as Chesterfords got into the 10th over of the game already on 80 runs. Wazz was eventually bowled having scored 53 runs leaving Naz, a newly qualified doctor to be joined at the crease by Shaun Stokley. Stokley played well for his 10 runs eventually being undone by a Yorker. Luke Claydon then stepped up to the plate as the run fest continued. Naz by this time had reached his 50 and was seeing the ball well. Claydon effortlessly cruised to 22 before holing out allowing vice captain Paul Phillips to get involved, uncharacteristically in a free role to hit out. Phillips made a cameo 13 before making way for Tom Price. Naz and Price continued to demoralise the bowling, Naz bringing up his maiden century with a colossal 6 over square leg. Eventually Naz was bowled after an innings comprising 15 4’s and 2 6’s after scoring exactly 100 runs, Price added 36 runs allowing the home team to get to 280 from their 40 overs.

In reply Jesus started poorly with Tom Thake (2-38) and James Lipscombe (1-31) wiping out the top order. The only resistance came from Loxam who amassed 117 runs but was not supported well enough in his effort to pose a problem. Walter Jackson bowled with great flight and guile as he took 1 for 24 and Luke Claydon (2-25) and Wazz Mughal (0-22) tidily ended the game as Jesus slumped to 224 allowing Chesterfords to win by 56 runs.
