Newly promoted Chesterfords began their
league season on Saturday, by hosting Hockerill 1st
XI, who had been relegated last year from division one.
Hockerill won the toss and sent the home team into bat.
Chesterfords got off to a solid start as openers Paul
Phillips (35) and Dave Lightning (30) dictated the bowling
scoring freely to all parts of the ground. With the score
on 66, Phillips was unlucky to be stumped and was replaced
at the crease by James Pullen. Pullen was in commanding
form, as he dominated the bowling scoring 50 and was soon
joined at by Piers Robson who continued in the same vain as
he despatched the ball with ease on his way to a very quick
55. Hockerill started to get back into the game as
Chesterfords middle order capitulated, both Wazz Mughal and
Charles Gjertsen being quickly dismissed without troubling
the scorers. However Tim Lewis steadied the innings, as he
put 34 runs on the board, allowing Chesterfords to score 261
for 8 off their 45 overs.
Chesterfords got off to a cracking
start in the field. Tom Thake (6 overs 2 for 29) bowled
tightly and stand in skipper Wazz Mughal (8 overs 2 for 34)
bowled with aggression as Hockerill could not get going.
With the pressure on, Walter Jackson (10 overs 1 for 37)
toyed with the batsman in an outstanding demonstration of
spin bowling. Continuing his form from last season, Adam
Miles (6 overs 3 for 44) ripped out the heart of the
Hockerill batting line up, before Tim Lewis (6 overs 2 for
24) finished the job off. Injured skipper James Lipscombe
was on hand to motivate the team, and was impressed by the
fielding and dedication shown by all the players as
Chesterfords notched up a comprehensive 82 run victory.
