Whittlesford were
the latest challengers to take on the in form Chesterfords
Sunday cricket team at the Rec this weekend. With a pitch
that looked like it may deteriorate as play went on, Captain
Wazz Mughal on winning the toss invited the visitors to
field.
Chesterfords got off
to a poor start losing veteran opener David Lightning in the
3rd over, and debutant John Fletcher in the 4th
over, but Piers Robson stuck to the task at hand and began
to destroy the Whittlesford bowling and morale as he
hammered his way to 65. Support came from the extravagant
batting of Luke Claydon (44) and then from the solid defence
of Paul Phillips. After Robson was eventually dismissed,
Phillips took over the mantle and coerced tail ender Tom
Thake into looking like a batsman. Phillips commanded the
middle as he went on to make 69 not out, with Thake
supporting well as he climbed to the dizzy heights of 31
before being caught and bowled. Alan Stokley made a cameo
appearance at number 11 to face the last ball of the
innings, and survived it meaning Chesterfords scored 265 for
9 off their 40 overs.
Whittlesford in
reply started solidly, not losing a wicket until the 21st
over. Openers Baker and Davidson did their best to keep out
some excellent bowling from Mark and Alan Stokley, and they
did well as the Stokley boys despite their tireless efforts
and innovative approach ended up wicketless. The young leg
spinner Adam Laird and Tom Thake however prospered from the
earlier efforts of their team mates as they each took 4
wickets and a huge Whittlesford collapse ensued; only Baker
(72) made the scorers work. Ultimately Whittlesford could
not cope with chasing the huge score the home team had put
on and slumped all out for 121.
