Chesterfords visited Dunmow on a
beautiful sunny afternoon looking to put behind them the
disappointing defeat at Hockerill the week before.
Chesterfords won the toss on a hard flat batting wicket and
decided to make the most of the favourable conditions by
asking Dunmow to take the field.
Chesterfords soon found themselves on
the back foot thanks to some aggressive fast bowling from
Gilbert and Gibson who wreaked havoc on Chesterfords top 3
batsmen dismissing them by the 8th over for the
addition of only 28 runs to the score. Wazz Mughal came to
the crease and under intense pressure managed to stave the
opening onslaught he faced and settled into his usual free
scoring rhythm. With a fast outfield Mughal played some
clever intelligent shots mixing between delicately working
the ball through the gaps and brutally despatching the ball
over the boundary. Steven Squares joined Mughal at the
crease with a gritty determined batting performance. Squares
moved the ball around the pitch taking advantage of the gaps
and the fast outfield as much as he could. Dunmow were
becoming increasingly frustrated with Squares as he raced to
his first ever league 50 with a beautifully timed cover
drive. Mughal carried on in the same vain but was finally
stopped in his tracks by Anu Weerasing for 49. James Pullen
continued where Mughal left off and with Squares they
started to build a very respectable score with determination
and flamboyance. Some of the stroke play from Pullen was
exceptional. Pullen eventually went for 34 after miss timing
a pull shot that was caught easily. With wickets tumbling at
the other end Squares took one risk too many and was caught
deep in the boundary off of the bowling of Gilbert.
Chesterfords tail end struggled with the reintroduction of
Gilbert, 2 for 32 and Gibson, 1 for 28 and were finally
bowled out in the 42nd over for 207.
With a good target to bowl at,
Chesterfords opened with the now familiar opening
combination of Mughal and Tom Thake. Both bowlers bowled
quickly and accurately with the batsmen playing and missing
on numerous occasions they were unlucky not to get more
purchase from their efforts. With Dunmow up with the run
rate and with plenty of wickets in hand, Tom Thake finally
made the important breakthrough with Watson taking a good
catch behind the stumps. Pullen joined the bowling attack,
and bowled with intelligence to pick up 2 wickets for 31
runs from his 10 overs, and Thake picked up another wicket
by virtue of a good catch from Mughal at point. Thake
finished with figures of 2 for 28 from his 10 overs. The
turning point in the game came with the long awaited return
of James Lipscombe to the cricket field. Lipscombe who had
been unavailable for long periods of the season took a
wicket with his first ball, and from his 7 overs managed to
return figures of 3 for 31 as Chesterfords started to get
into a winning position. Squares and Paul Phillips offered
the slower bowling option, and further excellent catches by
Thake and Mughal allowed Squares finish with figures of 2
for 15 and Phillips 1 for 19. Into the final few overs, the
game was on a knife edge, Chesterfords needing 1 wicket and
Dunmow needing 20 runs. Fortune favoured the brave and
Lipscombe brought his strike bowler Mughal back into the
attack where he destroyed up the stumps of Dunmow’s 11th
batsman Gibson returning figures of 1 for 42 from 10 overs
allowing Chesterfords to win by 19 runs and return to being
top of the 1017fm division 2.
