Chesterfords Young Guns Push Babraham All The Way

Sunday 22:07:07
Chesterfords made the short trip to Babraham with a very young side on a warm muggy day to celebrate the home teams 150 year anniversary. Babraham batted first on a hard dry wicket and got off to a steady start with their openers scoring freely after an tight probing spell from opening bowlers Alan Stokley (0 - 41 - 8) and Mark Stokley (1 - 23 -5). Chesterfords made the break through in the 9th over with gully taking a simple catch off the bowling of M. Stokley. This wicket slowed the run rate down and allowed Adam Miles (0 - 22 - 5) to put the batsman under pressure. Despite a pacey spell from A.Miles, opener A. Palmer (53 retired) continued to play his strokes and find the boundry on regular basis. After the big hitting A. Palmer retired just after his 50, Chesterfords changed there attack and the momentum swung in there favor with James Case (1 - 13 - 4), A, Simpkins (1 -16 - 4) and Tony Whitmore (3 - 29 - 6) all bowling impressively. Despite some tidy fielding especially from A. Miles with a fantastic run out and good bowling from young Richard Taylor (0 -10 -2) and Brad Mchugh (2 -23 -3) Babraham still managed to post a impressive 214 for 7 off there 40 overs.

Chesterfords started there reply with rain in the air and soon found themselves 18 - 3 of 5 overs. Shaun Stokley (4) and Brad McHugh (0) were the first to go soon followed by the experienced Charles Gjersten (13) which brought T, Whitmore to the crease with skipper Paul Phillips. T. Witmore took the game to Babraham with an barrage of strokes all round the park and was well supported by P. Phillips who once got himself in displayed some excellent stroke play. The partnership passed 50 and Chestefords found themselves on 95 - 3 off 20 overs. Both batsmen continued to score freely with a mixture of boundries and 1's and 2's and T. Whitmore was first to pass his half century and a few overs later skipper P.Phillips joined him. With 10 overs to go and 65 runs needed Babraham made the crucial break through taking Witmore's wicket who departed for a well made 65 and ended a 133 run partnership with Phillips. Phillips soon followed making 52 and chesterfords lower order despite a gutsy effort could not quite reach there target and was all out for 170 in the 38th over.
