On a warm Sunday afternoon Chesterfords
made the short trip to face local rivals Newport.
Chesterford’s won the toss and elected
to bat first looking to post a defendable total. Openers
Liam Woodcock (12) and Skipper Paul Phillips (33) got off to
a steady start capitalising on the indifferent bowling. In
the13th over Chesterfords lost there skipper and
soon after both openers were back in the pavilion. With the
score on 40 for 2 after 15 overs Jamie Perring (44) and
James Lipscombe (50) rebuilt the innings with a solid
partnership with a mixture of lusty blows and quick singles.
The Partnership was finally broken in the 33rd over when J.
Lipscombe was caught for a well made 50. This brought father
and son Jamie and Dave Perring (15 no) together at the
crease and they continued to increase the run rate. After a
long and entertaining knock J. Perring was run out in the 37th
over which brought Waz Mughal (8 no) to face the last few
overs. Chesterfords innings came to an close on 185 for 4
off there 40 overs. Despite a solid batting performance
Newport’s young bowlers made it hard work for Chesterfords
on a damp slow pitch.
Newport’s response was a fast aggressive approach with
opener Ian Rawlings smashing the ball to all parts being
dropped 3 times by the Chesterfords fielders on the way to
an impressive (97). Despite Debutant Carl Holding (1 – 26 of
4) bowling a tight probing line Newport raced onto 85 of the
first 8 overs The game swung towards Chesterfords favour
with the introduction of spin, especially from young Leg
Spinner Adam Laird (1 – 41 of 8) who bowled with control and
was unlucky not to finished with 3 or 4 wickets due to drop
catches in the deep. Adam was well supported by Walter
Jackson (1 – 44 of 7) which left the score on 130 – 3 of 22
overs. Newport found themselves in a commanding position
only needing 56 runs with 7 wickets remaining until Skipper
Paul Phillips (5 – 11 of 4.5) and Shaun Stokley (2 – 8 of 3)
turned the game on its head with a impressive spell of
bowling that saw Newport lose their last 7 wickets for 40
runs. Chesterfords won the match from an impossible position
with an all round impressive performance.
