Sunday saw an in
form Chesterfords team travel to Newport to avenge the close
loss earlier in the season. Losing the toss, Chesterfords
skipper Wazz Mughal was
more than happy to be invited to bat first by the
opposition.
Vice captain
Paul Phillips opened the
batting with Piers Robson.
Robson, who made his
debut earlier in the season against Newport where he was
dismissed for a duck obviously had other ideas this time. He
made the bowling look simple as he caressed the ball around
the ground. Phillips got
in on the act looking imperious as ever until he was caught
scoring a well earned 35. Luke Claydon joined
Robson at the crease,
and together they demoralised the opposition, occasionally
taking singles but mostly hitting the ball to the boundry.
Robson eventually
succumbed after hitting 15 4’s and a 6 as he made a
magnificent 80. Claydon was briefly joined by youngster Liam
Woodcock, and then by veteran
David Lightning. By this
time, Claydon had taken over where
Robson left off, hitting
8 4’s for himself with
Lightning anchoring the other end. Claydon was
eventually bowled for 49. This bought skipper
Wazz Mughal to the
crease, who also seemed to be in an aggressive frame of
mind. Mughal brutally
smashed the ball into the near by forest, then caused damage
to the neighbouring croquet lawn as he scored 29 from 6
scoring shots before being caught.
Jamie Perring and
Walter Jackson
continued in the same vain as Chesterfords reached 262 for 8
off their 40 overs.
Chesterfords started
well with the ball, Openers
Tom Thake and Jamie
Perring bowled economically and intelligently, and in
Perring’s second over he
struck twice putting Newport on the back foot.
Thake finished his 8 overs
wicketless going for 34 runs, and
Perring took 2 for 37.
Adam Laird and
Walter Jackson bowled
well, Laird taking 2 for
40 and Jackson 1 for 53
but by now Powell and Ingham were starting to get their eye
in, as Newport started to make a game of it.
Mughal then took the
wicket of Powell who batted well for his 85, and Newport
lost the impetus. Lightning
(0 for 34) and Mughal
(1 for 37) bowled out the innings with Newport only managing
to get to 251 allowing Chesterfords to win by 11 runs.
