Chesterfords So Close

Sunday 01:06:08

On a Overcast Sunday afternoon Chesterfords made the trip to picturesque Great Canfield with only 9 men on there team sheet. Chesterfords won the toss and batted first on a good looking wicket. Openers Tom Price and Paul Phillips got off to a slow but steady start however with the score on 35
without lost Chesterfords lost there skipper in the 9th over for 13. Price then found another gear smashing four 6 sixes in a well constructed innings unluckily falling one short of his 50 being caught at gully! With 15 overs completed Chesterfords score had progressed onto 60-2 which soon became 90-6 in the 22nd over due to some tight probing bowling and some excellent fielding form Great Canfield. With only 2 wickets remaining and best part of 15 overs to go Chesterfords looked like being bowled out cheaply until two impressive partnerships firstly from debutant Sam Thake with an excellent (62) smashing the ball to all parts with some fine stroke play and Nick Dowrick
propelled the score onto 150 then last man Walter Jackson along with Thake took the final score onto 172.

Chesterfords opening bowlers got off to a good start with James Lipscombe (3-25 off 8) the pick of the bowlers causing the Canfield batsmen constant trouble and was well backed up by Thake who bowled with aggression and pace. Jackson (1-25 off 8) gave a master class in tight probing Off Spin which saw Canfield reach 90-4 with 20 overs left. Even with stand-in Wicket keeper Wazz Mughal putting in a good performance behind the stumps Chesterfords back up bowlers Phillips and Price gave the initiative back to the Canfield batsmen until Jamie Perring came on to bowl and broke a vital partnership taking 2 wickets in as many overs. This left Canfield needing 25 runs for victory with 3 wickets remaining and despite an superb effort in the field highlight being Perringšs catch in the deep Canfield reached there target with 4 overs to spare.
