Umpiring Decision Costs Game

Saturday 03:05:08

Chesterford began their 2008 league campaign away at local rivals Ashdon. Winning the toss, captain Wazz Mughal elected to bat first. Chesterfords got off to a good start, with James Pullen  carrying on his form from the previous year as he effortlessly caressed his way to 43. A quick 28 from Tom Price helped the visitors continue to perform well when debutant Steve Atherton came to the crease. Atherton was soon joined by veteran David Perring and the pair took the fight to the bowlers. Perring was brutal in his dispatching of the ball to the boundary as he was undefeated on 49 and Atherton was clinical in his well paced innings as he went on to score 63 not out allowing  Chesterfords to get to 246 for 3 from their 45 overs.

In reply Ashdon got off to a slow start. Opening bowlers Wazz Mughal (1 for 44) and James Pullen (2 for 48) bowled a tight line and quickly had the openers dismissed. Then came the match turning decision, David Perring appeared to have Ashdon batsman Mike Furze caught behind but as Chesterfords were celebrating the umpire did not give the wicket. Furze went on to score 128 as despite a great bowling effort from Perring (1 for 41), Steve Atherton (1 for 39), Walter Jackson (0 for 49) and Tim Lewis (1 for 10) Ashdon achieved the required score to win by 5 wickets.
