Chesterfords got their new season
underway with a defeat to a young Granta side on Sunday. On
a hard flat wicket Chesterfords batted first and got off to
a steady start with both openers looking solid. Young Liam
Woodcock batted with real maturity at the top of the innings
playing strokes all round the park, and opening partner Paul
Phillips played well for (16) but was well bowled in the 8th
over. This breakthrough brought a mini collapse and two
experienced players in Wazz Mughal and Dave Perring soon
followed which left the score on 40 for 3. When Luke Claydon
joined Liam at the crease they rebuilt the innings and
started putting together a helpful partnership. As the score
was increasing there was a unfortunate run out between the
two in form batsman which lead to Chesterfords tail being
exposed and only L. Claydon provided any resistance with a
well made 57. Chesterfords were finally bowled out in the 30th
over for 138.
After the break Chesterfords knew they
needed early wickets to defend such a low total and with an
excellent opening spell of bowling from T Thake put the
Granta batsman under real pressure. With the mixture of some
dropped catches and some luck for the batting team,
Chesterford could never quite claw there way back into the
game. There were some positives to take, young Alex Marley
made his debut and looks to have a bright future, Walter
Jackson bowled a very good spell of spin bowling plus the
ever dependable Perring and Mughal made it very hard
for the batsman to score. However the batting team reached
there total in the 34th over for the loss of 5
wickets.
