Sunday Slump Continues

Sunday 28:04:07

On Sunday Chesterfords were looking to bounce back from there opening season defeat with a win over Newport. On a green bouncy pitch Chesterfords skipper had no hesitation but to bowl first. Wazz Mughal (1-34 off 8) opened the bowling with a pacey spell producing some unplayable deliveries at times and was well backed up by Shaun Stokley (3-43 off 8) who moved the ball in the air and off the pitch to cause the batsman major problems. Despite two early wickets and a bowler friendly pitch the Newport upper order still found the boundaries and found themselves on 120 for 2 of 20 overs. Chesterfords finally broke the partnership mainly due to a excellent spell of spin bowling from Walter Jackson (1-40 off 8) and swing bowling from James Case (4-35 off 5). On a hot afternoon Chesterfords bowlers and fielders stuck to there tasks and did well to bowl out Newport in the 34th over only a few costly overs that went for big runs meant that Newport still made a challenging total of 249 all out.

Chesterfords openers started there innings with a blistering display of stroke play mainly due to Piers Robson (41) and a solid knock form Charles Gjertsen (26) saw the score race onto 50 from the first 5 overs. Unfortunately Robson's fantastic innings came to end with a good catch in the deep and just a few overs later Gjertsen fell LBW which brought Tom Price (23) and Tom Dowrick (6) together. Dowrick looked aggressive from the off but was caught in the covers cheaply while  Price looked in good nick building his innings with 1's and 2's and smashing the ball to all parts once he had he's eye in. With the score on 80 for 3 skipper Paul Phillips (83*no) joined Price and started to rebuild the innings. Both batsmen found the gaps and the boundaries which moved the score quickly onto 110 for 3 of 20 overs. The partnership progressed the score onto 150 with 13 overs remaining, however Chesterfords lost a important wicket in Price and the momentum went with Newport. The next 5 overs only produced a handful of runs and some excellent death bowling from Newport's young bowlers really put the pressure on Chesterfords as they struggled to hit boundaries and despite a good effort from the lower order needing over 10 runs an over Chesterfords finish short of there target after there 40 overs on 235 - 7. It turned out to be a thrilling game of cricket that Newport just deserved to win due to there bowling performance.
